The first three games of the season against FBS teams showed a leaky Oregon Ducks defense, but that unit has tightened up in the last two games and risen to the level of what expectations were for them heading into the year.
The front four has been the catalyst, with all four NFL-caliber defensive linemen playing excellent football in stymying the offensive attacks of the UCLA Bruins and Nebraska Cornhuskers. Will it continue against the Illinois Fighting Illini in Week 8, as Oregon searches for its fifth win of the year and potentially a spot back in the top 25?
In order to do so, it'll have to contain a player who has turned into one of the top wide receivers in the nation and a running game that is physical and effective. Behind center, however,
is where things get tricky. East Carolina transfer and starter Katin Houser was injured against Michigan State and will be sidelined this weekend, leaving it up to Michael Clayton II to orchestrate the offense. He came in and played well in overtime against the Spartans, but it's unclear just how much the offense will change with him in charge.
In this piece, we broke down what Illinois does well offensively, who their players to watch are, if Oregon's built to stop their offense and what we expect to see come Saturday in Champaign. Let's get into it.
What do the Illinois Fighting Illini do well on offense?
With Houser at the helm, the Fighting Illini have shown a spread offense, oftentimes with just one tight end three receivers on the field in which Houser wasn't afraid to trust his receivers with throws down the field. The quarterback was a factor in the run game as well, whether it be scrambles or designed runs on option plays. The rushing attack with the running backs, meanwhile, is a downhill approach fit for their pair of physical backs.
The running game won't change with Clayton back there now, as the Fighting Illini will probably lean on their running back duo even more in Houser's absence. In the little bit of time that we saw Clayton on the field, the offense didn't change in the slightest. The true freshman was still expected to make throws down the field, which he did with a bit of inconsistency in missing an open receiver on a crucial fourth-quarter play.
How much of a factor Clayton's legs will be remains to be determined, but he showed in high school to be a reliable runner and playmaker in off-script plays. His one throw in overtime was on an RPO, in which the linebacker bit down on the run fake and Clayton whizzed a ball over his head to the seam for a score. The youngsters talent was evident in a relief performance, but with two weeks of game-planning entirely to fit his skillset, there's still some mystery to what exact offense we'll see come Saturday.
Who are the top players to know?
QB Michael Clayton II
Clayton is a bit of a wildcard, as mentioned. A three-star recruit in the 2026 class, he won the backup job as a true freshman and was pressed into action in a tight game against Michigan State two weeks ago. Operating late in the fourth quarter and in overtime, the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder completed six-of-eight passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns, including one in overtime. The Orlando native stood tall in the pocket and showed off his strong arm, while also showing an ability to use his legs when needed. Making his first career start against the Ducks, how Clayton's full skillset translates to the college level will be revealed.
RB Aidan Laughery
One part of Illinois' backfield alongside Ca'Lil Valentine, Aidan Laughery has emerged as the RB1 in carrying the ball 62 times for 391 yards and one touchdown in 2026. A fifth-year senior who's spent his entire career at Illinois, Laughery has been a contributing factor in the backfield ever since his junior season. Standing 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, the Illinois native isn't the most dynamic, though he's a consistant chain-mover who the Fighting Illini rely on heavily especially in recent weeks with 40 carries in the last three games.
WR Collin Dixon
Collin Dixon is undoubtedly the top player on the team as he's in the midst of a breakout senior campaign. He amassed 548 yards and five touchdowns last season but has already surpassed those marks midway through 2026, totaling 47 catches, 608 yards and nine touchdowns. Not the biggest at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, Dixon makes up for it with his savvy route-running on the outside ability to make tough catches at the point of attack. He's the head of the snake of this Illinois offense.
Are the Oregon Ducks built to stop Illinois?
With the way that the Ducks have stopped the run in the previous two games, they should be able to once again. The Fighting Illini run game is good, but not great and seemingly not on the level of the Bruins or Cornhuskers' rushing attacks.
Where Oregon could have trouble is on one-on-one throws down the sideline, something Houser excelled at but Clayton didn't necessarily show in his eight throws. The Ducks' secondary has been middling at best this year, underperforming after being one of the top pass defenses in the nation in 2026. So, if Clayton is willing to rip the ball both to the middle of the field and outside the numbers 20-to-30 yards down the field, it could cause some issues for the Ducks' cornerbacks.
But in between the tackles, Oregon has the clear advantage.
What should we expect on Saturday?
This is about as hard to predict as anything considering Hauser's absence and Clayton starting the game. He could come out and play like a classic true freshman quarterback, showing nerves and hesitancy in the pocket. In that case, the Ducks could eat him alive, stopping the Fighting Illini offense in its tracks.
But if Clayton is slinging the ball around the yard with his elite arm strength and using his athleticism both in the designed run game and off script, that offers Illinois much more variance as far as success goes. My guess is that Clayton will play conservative early before settling in a bit as the game goes on, but he won't have the same success against Oregon that he did in limited action against Michigan State.
The Fighting Illini's run game should be stopped by the the Ducks' front four, but much of this game defensively for Oregon is dependent on how Clayton plays and if he's able to distribute the ball to his receivers on the outside, namely Dixon — who's a true game-changer at wide receiver.
