After LeBron James decided against signing with the Warriors, he left the franchise in a difficult spot. With minimal impact free agents remaining and a desire to hold onto draft assets, Golden State is stuck between two directions.
A "win-now" side headlined by Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler III and a "build-for-the-future" idea with Yaxel Lendeborg and future draft picks. According to Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard, it seems as though Warriors owner Joe Lacob is more concerned with rebuilding. “What Lacob wants to do, and this might get Warriors' fans mad, but he wants to build the next team after Steph Curry.”
While Lacob's viewpoint isn't unrealistic in theory, it certainly makes you question some of the team's
decisions this offseason. If moving toward the future is now the direction, should the franchise have drafted a 23-year-old rookie? Should the team have re-signed 40-year-old Al Horford? Although these moves were made in the hopes of landing James, many fans expected Golden State to at least attempt to build another contender around Curry via the trade market rather than waiving the white flag.
