For the second straight summer, Jonathan Kuminga's immediate future was a topic of discussion during the offseason. During the 2025 offseason, the Golden State Warriors and Kuminga remained locked in negotiations for months before ultimately agreeing on a deal. This summer saw Kuminga in a somewhat similar situation after the Atlanta Hawks declined the team option
on his contract, making him a free agent.Kuminga has since signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves on a two-year $12.4 million deal, with the second year being a player option. Since that deal got signed, Kuminga's agent, Aaron Turner, has appeared on multiple podcasts to discuss Kuminga's offseason.
When speaking with FanDuel TV's 'Run It Back,' Turner noted that putting money before
basketball is a surefire way to limit future earnings.
“Money coming before basketball is not how you continue to make more and more money," Turner said. "… Next year is a way better free agency year for him…teams that have been trying to sign-and-trade for him, like Sacramento and Chicago, will have a lot of money."
In recent weeks, Turner has also appeared on 'The Kevin O'Connor Show,' where he discussed Kuminga's offseason and decision to sign with the Timberwolves. However, it would appear that Warriors' veteran Draymond Green wasn't impressed with some of the details Turner shared during that guest appearance. As such, Green has since used his own podcast, 'The Draymond Green Show,' to air his frustration with the situation.
“This is a tough one for me because I love JK," Green said. "And I’ve met Aaron, a great guy. But this is not good... Number one, absolutely unnecessary to talk about this man’s pockets on a podcast, ...talking about a guy’s money and how much they lost and what they gained and like talking about somebody’s 11 and a half million dollars, ‘that’s it’… ‘THAT’S IT’?! This ain’t Monopoly money!”
Green has been in the NBA for 14 seasons. He has a firm grasp of how negotiations go behind the scenes. Furthermore, it's fair to assume that he's experienced with how agents tend to operate during free-agency periods. So, it makes sense that he would speak out if left unimpressed by a situation.
For the Warriors, however, the situation with Kuminga this summer serves as a reminder of just how complicated their relationship has become in recent years. Now, with Kuminga's future elsewhere in the league, the Warriors and Green can simply watch as the next chapter in his career continues to unfold.
