Former president of basketball operations for the Golden State Warriors, Bob Myers, recently joined two NBA Hall of Famers, Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter, on their podcast. Throughout the conversation, Myers discussed his success, difficult moments and his decision to leave the franchise. During the interview, Myers was asked about the toughest decision he had to make when in Golden State's front office, and his answer may surprise fans.
“Trading Iguodala. We had to trade a guy who’d won three championships with the team in 2019 to sign D’Angelo Russell,” said Myers.
“To call a guy—that's when it gets personal and say, 'We are trading you.' We trade him to Memphis. And he knew it wasn’t a team trying to win. We were putting him in a situation.”
Myers went on to talk about how well Iguodala handled the situation and how it all worked out for the former NBA Finals MVP, who made another NBA Finals appearance with the Miami Heat following the trade.
After two seasons with the Heat, Iguodala would eventually return to the Bay Area, finishing his career after two more seasons with the Warriors, one of which was another championship season (2021-22). Andrew Wiggins, a pivotal piece of the 2021-22 championship, was a byproduct of the Iguodala trade, as the aforementioned Russell was later sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Wiggins.
