On August 29, 2026, Stephen Curry became eligible for a two-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors. The superstar guard can sign a deal worth up to an estimated $136.7 million, which would see him earn north of $60 million during his age-39 and 40 seasons.
Of course, in the modern NBA, where teams are trying to navigate the punitive second luxury tax apron, there will likely be some hope that Curry is open to taking a slight discount on his next contract. After all, that would give the Warriors some additional cap flexibility to continue building out a competitive roster around Curry and co.
During a recent appearance on 95.7 The Game's "Stein and Guru," ESPN's Anthony Slater discussed Curry's potential contract extension, noting
that he wouldn't be surprised to see the sharpshooting guard take the maximum on offer.
“I would not be shocked if he takes the max," Slater said. "I would probably be a little bit more surprised if he locked into a haircut now. Now, again, he might be a wait-and-see thing—what can and can’t get done... Guys like max money."
Curry has long spoken of his desire to continue contending for championships during the twilight of his career. The best way for that to happen is for him to work with Golden State's front office to ensure the franchise has the cap flexibility to make moves in the trade and free agency markets.
Nevertheless, Curry has earned the right to command such a lofty pay cheque. Therefore, any extension negotiations could go either way. Right now, all we know for sure is that both Curry and the Warriors are open to extending their partnership. What that extension is going to look like remains anybody's guess.
