Jimmy Butler is heading into the final year of his current contract.
He'll become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Butler is currently recovering from a torn ACL and is unlikely to feature for the Golden State Warriors during the opening months of the season. Nevertheless, now that Stephen Curry's future has been locked in, talks of Butler's contract situation will likely begin to gather steam.Yet, while Warriors fans and media may discuss Butler's future in the Bay Area, it doesn't appear that it's something he's too worried about. During Golden State's media day, which took place on Monday, Sept. 28, Butler gave a straightforward answer regarding his current deal, the possibility of re-signing, and why he's not worried about any of that right
now.
“I’ve made a couple of buckaroos in my years in the league,” Butler said. “It ain’t even about money. To me it’s always going to be about winning. When you win, that contract stuff takes care of itself. I just want to get back to doing what I love. I’ve never once worried about a contract. I haven’t. I just go out there, and I play, and all of that stuff happens. So as long as I get back to doing what I’m supposed to be doing, I’ll be OK.”
Butler has previously noted that he would prefer to remain in Golden State. He seems happy in the Bay Area, and when healthy, has been an integral part of Steve Kerr's rotation. Last season, Butler suited up for 38 games before his injury. During those outings, he averaged 20 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, shooting 55.2% from two-point range and 37.6% from deep.
There will be plenty of time for Butler to negotiate a longer-term stay with the Warriors, should they share his interest in extending their partnership. However, right now, Butler will undoubtedly be focused on his recovery and getting back onto the court. Until then, negotiations will likely stay on pause, which makes sense for both sides.
