As the 2026-27 NBA season is nearing, a former member of the Golden State Warriors is opting to leave the association and play overseas. According to multiple reports, 11-year NBA veteran guard D'Angelo Russell is signing with the Shanghai Sharks in China's Chinese Basketball Association.
The 30-year old point guard began the 2025-26 season with the Dallas Mavericks, playing in 26 games with the franchise before being traded to the Washington Wizards. Russell was again traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a six-team trade at the start of the summer in July. Prior to the start of the new season, Russell was waived by the Grizzlies. After being waived by Memphis, Russell agreed to a deal with the Shanghai Sharks.

Russell was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft. The former Buckeye went on to play for the Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Mavericks.
Russell played 33 games for the Warriors, landing in the Bay Area following a sign-and-trade with Kevin Durant and Nets. In his time with the Warriors, Russell averaged 23.6 points on 43% shooting from the field and 37.4% shooting from beyond the arc to go along with 6.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds per contest. Russell was later traded to the Timberwolves in a deal that included Andrew Wiggins and a future first round pick that turned into Jonathan Kuminga.
Over his 11-year NBA career, Russell averaged 17 points on 42.7% shooting from the field and 36.3% shooting from deep with 5.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds over 655 regular season games. During the 2018-19 season, Russell was named an All-Star with the Nets.
The CBA season will start on Oct. 16 when the Sharks meet the Shenzhen Leopards. Russell will play alongside former NBA players Brandon Goodwin and Hassan Whiteside with the Sharks.
