Brooklyn Nets rookie guard Mikel Brown Jr. has a chance to be the starting point guard for the Nets after being selected by the team with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Brooklyn surprised some people by selecting Brown over someone like guard Darius Acuff Jr., but the Nets recently provided some video that could explain why they leaned towards Brown over anyone else.
"Yes, sir. It's by taking command, taking charge. Knowing that I can take accountability when I'm messing up. They can get on me just as well as I can get on them," Brown said when asked by general manager Sean Marks about his leadership qualities, as shown in Brooklyn's "The Bridge" video series. Marks has spoken about why the team chose Brown outside of his potential
on the court and his intangibles played a huge part in the decision.
"I love to play the game the right way. I'm not the one to be selfish and to care about stats. I want to win at the end of the day," Brown continued. Leading up to the draft, there were plenty of reports suggesting that Brown impressed multiple teams over the course of the pre-draft process due to how well he answered questions along with his demonstration of his skills in various drills.
Brown, 20, looked like he was going to be selected lower than most had predicted earlier in the season given that he struggled throughout the season with a back injury. Despite the fact that Brown's talent and leadership skills were on display during his freshman season at Louisville University, the NBA tends to be cautious about players dealing with ailments like back issues, but he showed that he on the other side of the injury by the time the Combine came around.
During Brooklyn's summer circuit in the California Classic and Las Vegas Summer League, Brown averaged 15.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 38.8% from the field and 34.6% from behind the three-point line. Time will tell how prepared Brown is to make an impact on the Nets when the regular season begins in October, but either way, he's ready to be a leader from the first day.
