Brooklyn Nets rookie guard Mikel Brown Jr. comes into the NBA with a significant amount of hype given how promising he looked during his freshman season last year at the University of Louisville. Brooklyn added Brown, among other players like former Minnesota Timberwolves
forward Julius Randle, to the roster in hopes of putting forth a better product next season, but could Brown lead the group of newcomers?"Shrewd decision-making isn't the first thing that comes to mind with Brown, who plays a flashy, risk-reward style. But if he had more scoring help than he did at Louisville or with the summer league Nets, he would be better able to pick his spots," Zach Buckley wrote for Bleacher Repot when discussing the Nets. The outlet viewed Brown as Brooklyn's
best weapon and it makes sense given the circumstances.
"And the creative passes he throws and prowess in pick-and-roll plays suggests there are some pretty awesome quarterbacking skills at play," Buckley continued. "It would still be pretty stunning to see Brown paces rotational rookies in assist-to-turnover ratio after averaging 4.7 assists against 3.1 giveaways in college (and 4.0 against 2.7 this summer).
Brown, 20, is coming off a summer league circuit in which he averaged 15.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 38.8% from the field and 34.6% from behind the three-point line. Buckley predicted that Brown would "lead rookie rotation regulars in assist-to-turnover ratio" and the former Louisville Cardinal's main rookie competition would be forwards Joshua Jefferson and Tyler Bilodeau.
Heading into September's training camp, Brown will likely be competing with second-year guards in Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf for minutes at the point guard spot, but the No. 6 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft seems to have a leg up on both of them thus far. However, there's still plenty of time between now and the season opener so the hope is that Brown can be better than expected if he's going to be the best addition the team made this summer.
