The Brooklyn Nets made an interesting choice in the 2026 NBA Draft this past summer when they selected guard Mikel Brown Jr. with the No. 6 overall pick out of the University of Louisville. What made Brooklyn's choice was not because Brown wasn't worthy of the selection, but because some people are wondering if the Nets should have chosen Darius Acuff Jr. instead.
While every sport is filled with fans having strong reactions to the beginning of a season as everyone tries to make sense of what has happened up to a certain point. One of those storylines is Nets fans wondering if they made the wrong choice given where Brown and Acuff stand heading into Saturday's slate of games and both teams struggling to win games.
Brown is averaging 12.0 points,
2.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 33.8% from the field and 29.7% from behind the three-point line in six games played. Acuff is off to an amazing start for the Sacramento Kings as he's averaging 25.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game while shooting 40.2% from the floor and 31.0% from deep in nine games played.
For starters, it should be noted that both rookies have had completely different roles for their respective teams up to this point in the season. For Brown, he has begun the season on a minutes restriction as the Nets are trying to manage his body after he missed half of his freshman campaign with the Cardinals while Acuff has been Sacramento's starting point guard from the beginning and is averaging 36.9 minutes played per game.
From hearing head coach Jordi Fernandez, general manager Sean Marks, and various players on the Nets discuss Brown, it seems like the team is happy to have him and the same is true for the Kings' feelings about Acuff. There are still plenty of games to be played by both players and while Acuff has been one of the best rookies to this point in the year, the two players would be fairly-judged once Brown is able to play a similar role for his team.
