Brooklyn Nets guard Egor Demin has missed the past four games as he continues to recover from a right leg bone bruise that he suffered in a 125-124 overtime loss to the Boston Celtics. Brooklyn put out a statement on Oct. 29 that Demin would be reevaluated in one week, meaning that he had a chance to play on Saturday against the Atlanta Hawks, but the plan has shifted.
"He's progressing well. He's on the court. He's not going to play today or tomorrow, and then we'll go from there," Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez said prior to Saturday's matchup against the Hawks, per Brian Lewis of the New York Post. While it's good news that Demin is progressing well in his recovery, him being unavailable on Saturday in Atlanta or Sunday at the Dallas Mavericks
weakens Brooklyn's rotation.
Demin, 20, is averaging 7.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting 31.0% from the field and 28.6% from behind the three-point line. With Demin out of the rotation for the time being, Fernandez has been experimenting with the rotation, including starting forward Danny Wolf against the Hawks with the usual starters in Nolan Traore, Michael Porter Jr., Julius Randle, and Day'Ron Sharpe.
The Nets (2-6) begin their four-game road trip at Atlanta and that will be Brooklyn's second chance to notch a two-game winning streak, especially with the Hawks playing on the second night of a back-to-back. After Sunday's matchup at the Mavericks, the Nets' next game will be a visit to Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday so it's possible that Demin is back for that matchup.
Ultimately, this is an 82-game season and the Nets have always maintained the position of being patient with all of the players when it comes to injuries and Demin is the latest example. Brooklyn has the chance of winning a second-straight game in a row and while the former BYU Cougar won't be part of that equation, players like Porter and Randle will continued to do their part to lead this team.
