Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. is heading into the 2026-27 NBA season with the responsibility of being one of the offensive engines on the team once again this upcoming campaign. Brooklyn brought in Porter last season as part of a deal that also gave them a first-round pick from the Denver Nuggets and he thrived as the primary scoring option for the Nets.
Porter was given the keys to the offense under head coach Jordi Fernandez and he went on to have a career-high in a majority of statistical categories, including points per game and assists per game. Porter, 28, had the best season of his career by averaging 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point
line.
With training camp beginning next week, Porter will be able to prepare for the upcoming season with his teammates, most of which are on the younger side of the age spectrum. Porter will have his own goals to take care of over the course of the 2026-27 campaign so here are three goals for him as Nets Wire looks at the entire roster heading into camp:
Shoot The Ball Better
One could argue that a perimeter player shooting 46.3% from the floor and 36.3% from deep is still efficient, especially a player with the shot diet Porter had over the course of last season. However, Porter shot 49.6% from the field and 41.0% from behind the three-point line prior to January, but shot just 43.1% and 31.7%, respectively from January on. Porter has to maintain high-efficiency for the entire season.
Stay Locked In For The Entire Season
Porter admitted after last season ended that he "took his foot" off the gas after the All-Star break since it became clear that the Nets weren't qualifying for the postseason and had a long shot at the play-in tournament. While Porter had been used to winning games during his seven years with the Nuggets, he has to find a way to stay engaged if Brooklyn struggles again this season.
Improve Shot Creation
In connection with the first goal, Porter could work on his ability to create better shots for himself given that opponents forced him off the three-point line as he continued to shoot the ball well when open. With Julius Randle now on the roster, Porter should have an easier time getting open shots in general and a slight improvement in his shot creation should do wonders for his efficiency.
