NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has an important season ahead of him as he prepares to once again be one of the main sources of scoring and shooting. Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks and Porter have been in negotiations over the course of the season regarding his contract extension and the sharpshooter gave an update on where those deliberations lie.
"It might sound strange, but it's literally not on my mind at all. I know I hired a great agent, and I know him and Sean have been speaking some," Porter said to the media during his Media Day interview on Monday. Porter came into the 2026 NBA offseason knowing that he was eligible for an extension, but it seems like he and the Nets wants to get something done, but aren't
in a rush to do so.
"For me, I'm just excited to play basketball. I never was a dude who played basketball for a big contract or for the money," Porter continued. "For me, I'm just excited to play with these guys and be in Brooklyn and build this organization as one of the leaders. I voiced that I would love to be in Brooklyn and that I'm enjoying playing with these guys."
Porter, 28, is coming off the best season of his career as he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line. Porter is eligible to sign an extension for up to four years for a maximum amount of $234 million, but some people around the league have been wondering how much Marks would pay Porter to keep him in Brooklyn.
Porter has made it clear that he wants to be with the Nets for the long-term, but that could depend on if another team offers him a deal he can't refuse as Brooklyn remains in the midst of this rebuild. This storyline could last for half of this season given that Porter can technically be extended after the year is over, but whether Porter is still in Brooklyn after the February trade deadline could tell plenty about where both sides stand on the extension.
