NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets forward Danny Wolf has been one of the members of the "Flatbush Five" that has seen his role reduced thanks to some of the offseason additions the Nets made. Brooklyn head coach Jordi Fernandez has been relying mostly on a nine-man rotation that Wolf was normally outside of, but Fernandez went to him in a big spot and he didn't disappoint.
"Obviously in the NBA, there's going to be times, especially early in your career, that you might not be in the rotation, and that was the case for me [at the] start of the year," Wolf said to the media after Wednesday's 114-104 win over the Charlotte Hornets. Fernandez has made it clear that this point of the season will include him searching for different lineup combinations within
the rotation, which led him to calling Wolf's number in the third quarter.
"Everyone emphasizes and preaches [that] you got to be ready, and you hear it over and over. Just make sure you're doing all all your work, doing all your things to make sure that when your number gets called, you're ready," Wolf continued. "I tried taking advantage of all the time I had. When coach called my name in the second half, I was ready, and I was looking forward to that opportunity and tried doing everything I could to help the team win."
Wolf, who made his first appearance in Wednesday's game with 10:32 remaining in the third quarter to replace starter Chaney Johnson, was called on for more than just some spot minutes for players in foul trouble or in need of rest. Wolf played 19 minutes and finished the contest with 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists, and while he picked up four fouls, he was still a +17 plus/minus, indicating his overall impact on the game.
Prior to Wednesday's matchup against Charlotte, Wolf had only made two other appearances for the Nets in the previous seven games played and most of those minutes came in games where the outcome was basically decided. Be that as it may, Wolf's outing against the Hornets could give Fernandez and the coaching staff more of a reason to open up the rotation or to specifically set aside some minutes for Wolf moving forward.
