The Brooklyn Nets are a few days away from Media Day and training camp as they prepare for a 2026-27 NBA season that they hope will be better than last year. Brooklyn made some moves this offseason, including trading for former Minnesota Timberwolves forward Julius Randle, but what could this season change about the Nets depending on what the ultimate outcome is?
"The NBA's lottery reform will expose Brooklyn's lack of top-end talent and cripple its hopes of building primarily through the draft," Ben Golliver wrote of the Nets for ESPN. As part of ESPN's attempt to look at all 30 NBA franchises and where those teams will be in three years from now, the outlet ranked Brooklyn 24th in those particular power rankings with Golliver giving his bold
prediction for the organization.
"In turn, the Nets will get bored of rebuilding and make an all-in play for a superstar during one of the next two summers," Golliver continued with his bold prediction of the Nets as they head into this season. "This is just the natural life cycle for Brooklyn, which sold the farm for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in 2013 and landed Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in 2019."
Nets governor Joe Tsai and general manager Sean Marks have said multiple times over the past few years that patience is the name of the game with regards to their rebuild. However, Tsai has been more vocal about the franchise this offseason and while he has maintained that the organization won't make any rash decisions, he has also made it clear that Brooklyn is hoping to turn things around sometime soon.
As Golliver mentioned, if the Nets finish the 2026-27 season as one of the worst teams in the NBA like many project them to be, it's possible that the franchise could try to speed up the rebuild next summer. Brooklyn has a history of going all-in when they feel that there is a good opportunity to do so, regardless of the ownership, so it's fair to wonder if the Nets are one season away from making a big move like that happen.
