NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets guard Egor Demin had to leave Tuesday's 125-124 overtime loss to the Boston Celtics early due to suffering a right leg injury in the first half. After the game, Brooklyn described Demin's injury as a right leg contusion and while he said afterwards that he felt that his injury wasn't that serious, he will be out of action for the next week.
The Nets announced on Thursday that Demin had been diagnosed with a right leg bone bruise and that he would be re-evaluated in one week's time. Assuming that Demin is good to go after one week, his next time to take the floor will be at the Atlanta Hawks on Nov. 7. Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez didn't seem too concerned about Demin's injury being a long-term issue, but gave his thoughts
on the second-year guard.
"He's good, he's in good spirits. Obviously, he'll want to be out there helping his teammates, but we'll reevaluate [him] in a week. We're not concerned with anything long term," Fernandez said after Thursday's practice. Demin left Tuesday's loss to the Celtics after 10 minutes and put up two points and two assists in that timespan. While the team is hoping Demin can return according to his timeframe, his absence will open up playing time for others.
"I think you saw it a little bit on the Boston game because we had enough minutes just to look at that. Obviously, we're going to use the guys if they didn't play because I think that's what we're preaching," Fernandez said. With Demin and Nolan Traore (cramping) unable to finish the game due to their respective physical ailments, five of the six players that came off the bench saw at least 22 minutes.
With Demin out of the rotation, candidates to take his spot are Keon Ellis and rookie Mikel Brown Jr., who had himself quite the fourth quarter and overtime in Boston. Whichever way Fernandez decides to adjust his rotation in the wake of Demin's injury, the good news is that his injury doesn't sound serious and if everything goes according to plan, he'll miss just four games.
With Egor Demin out for the Nets for at least the next week, I asked Jordi Fernandez how Demin's absence will impact the rotation:
