Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has had an interesting summer up to this point as he is eligible for a contract extension following the best season of his career. Brooklyn and Porter seem to want to continue the partnership after last season, but depending on whether an extension is reached or not, what can be made of his future, especially amidst the Nets' rebuild?
"I think what he did last year is legit and teams are going to see it that way. But the problem you have is if you trade for him, are you going to extend him and what is the number," an NBA Eastern Conference executive said of Porter, per Sean Deveney of Heavy. Given that Porter has been rumored as a trade candidate since last season, the potential of him being dealt will
always be on the table as long as Brooklyn is rebuilding.
"The Nuggets overpaid him when they gave him that extension, and if he wants to be paid based on that, that is not going to be an easy sell," the Eastern Conference executive continued, per Deveney. "If he can accept getting into a salary slot that makes more sense for him, you can make that trade. It’s an expiring deal but the Nets would get a first-round pick for him still."
Porter, 28, is coming off a 2025-26 season in which he averaged a career-high 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.3% from behind the three-point line. As various salary cap experts have noted, Porter is eligible to sign an extension for four years and $234 million, but that doesn't mean that the Nets will give him the maximum amount in either metric that he's eligible for.
Even if Porter doesn't sign an extension, the Nets could still choose to hold onto him with the goal of signing him to an extension after next season is over. Either way, time will tell if Porter and Brooklyn agrees to an extension. If they don't, the speculation about Porter's trade status will only increase as the season progresses, especially if a first-round pick is on the table in any trade.
