The Brooklyn Nets are still in the midst of their rebuild as they are heading into a 2026-27 NBA season in which they're hoping to win more games in front of their fans. Brooklyn is still building the roster in the hopes of creating a playoff contender in the near future, but there are some around the league that aren't convinced of their future prospects just yet.
"The Brooklyn Nets' roster might be the least threatening in the league, though that could change if they use Michael Porter Jr.'s expiring salary to bring back a player who could take on a first-option role beyond this season," Grant Hughes wrote about the Nets for Bleacher Report. 28th despite the addition of forward Julius Randle this summer.
"The other top talents, led by second-year guard Egor Demin and rookie Mikel Brown Jr., are a long way from stardom," Hughes continued. "Jordi Fernandez is a good coach who gets whatever talent he has to play hard, and the Nets don't have a bad contract on the books. They've had Fernandez and flexibility before, though, and the losses keep piling up."
To Hughes' point, the Nets are projected to be one of the worst teams in the league next season so it seems that most of the NBA is not impressed with the roster at the moment. While Randle joins forward Michael Porter Jr. as one of the veteran leaders on the team, it's fair to wonder how much the duo will impact wins and losses next season given the relative inexperience of the roster as a whole.
More to the point, Brooklyn's likely starting lineup will include guards Mikel Brown Jr. and Egor Demin along with center Day'Ron Sharpe, who will be the projected starting center for the first time as he heads into his sixth NBA season. Time will tell how good the Nets will be with head coach Jordi Fernandez leading the way, but it seems that some around the league believe that the team is still a few moves away.
