The Brooklyn Nets head into the 2026-27 NBA season still in the midst of their rebuild and that means that most of the season will be spent developing the younger players on the roster. Brooklyn has added more veterans to the roster, including trading for Minnesota Timberwolves
forward Julius Randle, but general manager Sean Marks could be in a position where he'll have to prove that this rebuild is progressing.In a recent article from Brian Lewis of the New York Post, he suggested that Marks could be under a microscope over the course of this season given the current circumstances. The Nets do not have control of their first-round pick in the 2027 NBA Draft as they owe that pick to the Houston Rockets, but they do have the New York Knicks'
first-round pick so Brooklyn will likely have two picks in the late first-round.
Prior to the beginning of this season, many around the league believe that the Nets will be one of the worst teams in the NBA, which is tough to deal with given that Brooklyn could use another high selection. Over the past two seasons, the Nets have used the No. 8 overall pick and No. 6 overall pick on guards in Egor Demin and Mikel Brown Jr., respectively, so their development will be paramount.
Adding Randle to the roster should makes the Nets more competitive than they were last season, especially given the fact that he will be sharing the floor with sharpshooting forward Michael Porter Jr. However, time will tell if Porter and/or Randle will be in Brooklyn for the rest of this season given that both veterans will likely be rumored in trade talks until the February deadline passes.
Marks has been entrusted by governor Joe Tsai to guide the team back to playoff contention after the downfall of the big 3 and so far, the former NBA center has done a solid job recovering from that unfortunate ending. Given Tsai's comments this summer, Marks may have to prove that his decisions will bear fruit for the franchise moving forward and this season could be the first time that Tsai is looking for those positive signs.
