Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. has been one of the better three-point shooters in the NBA since he entered the league heading into the 2018-19 season. One of the reasons that Brooklyn traded for Porter last offseason was likely due to his ability to shoot from long-range, but he has seen someone even better than him while preparing for the season.
"Bro, I used to think that I was the best shooter. Not anymore, dog. He beat me by one spot. It was close," Porter said of Miami Heat guard Klay Thompson during a livestream with content creator N3on. Porter described how he had a workout with Klay Thompson that made him see that he wasn't the best shooter in the league, which is saying something.
"After the workout, he was like, ‘It's been
so long since I've shot against someone who challenges me.' That's how I felt. I never get to work out with someone who challenges me,” Porter continued. Since the 2019-20 campaign, Porter has made 1,019 three-pointers while shooting 39.8% from behind the three-point line, ranking third in the league over that time span.
The only players that have shot the three-point shot more efficiently than Porter are Detroit Pistons forward Duncan Robinson (39.9%) and Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (40.8%). Within that same time span, Thompson, who spent most of that time playing alongside Curry with the Warriors, made 1,342 three-pointers on 39.5% shooting from deep.
While Porter had plenty of per-game career-highs last season with the Nets, he ironically had one of his worst seasons shooting the long ball at just 36.3%. While Porter was forthcoming about how good of a shooter Thompson is, the former Denver Nuggets forward is a sharpshooter in his own right and it seems like he'll be looking forward to having a better shooting season in 2026-27.
Michael Porter Jr. tells NEON that Klay Thompson finally humbled him as he constantly claimed he was the best shooter in the NBA until they worked out together recently 😭
