The Brooklyn Nets
are in the midst of a rebuild after trading away Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving during the 2022-23 NBA season after it became clear that something wasn't working. Brooklyn did what it could to win during the big 3 era, but since then, the Nets have been trying to build the next iteration of the team into something the fanbase can be proud of, but some around the league are not convinced."What do you think the Brooklyn Nets will do this season... Garbage, straight garbage. That's all right. You'll get another pick. You guys just don't have an identity," former NBA player Channing Frye said of the Nets in a YouTube Shorts video as part of his "Road Trippin" podcast. Frye was asked for his projection of Brooklyn for this upcoming
season and he did not hold back.
"What is a Brooklyn Net? You guys have Michael Porter Jr., Julius Randle, but who's your center? Who's your starting guard? You're missing a lot of pieces," Frye continued. "So, you've got got a guy or two, but you don't have a team, and you're going against the East, which is a beast this year. So, good luck." The one thing Frye was correct about was that the Eastern Conference has gotten tougher since last season.
When it comes to Frye's projection of how good the Nets will be this season, it seems that he is more on track given that most around the NBA predict that Brooklyn will finish as one of the worst teams in the Association. Depending on the source, the Nets are projected to win somewhere between 20 games and 30 games, but the more interesting part of Frye's statement was about Brooklyn's identity.
As Frye alluded to, the Nets have Michael Porter Jr. and Julius Randle as the headliners of the team this season, but the identify of this team has been evident since head coach Jordi Fernandez took over two seasons ago. Fernandez has made it clear to the media that any Nets player will play hard and compete the same way that he is from the sideline. If Frye watches Brooklyn play more this season, he will get a better sense of that.
