The USC Trojans' struggles have been frustrating to see, and the season is already looking grim. To make matters worse, another former Pac-12 rival is in contention for a College Football Playoff berth from the Big Ten. That's UCLA. The Bruins are rising while the Trojans do not look the part.
In a recent tweet, writer Bryan Fischer highlights just how frustrating things have been at USC under Lincoln Riley. Here is what he had to say:
"UCLA has improved more in four games under Bob Chesney than I've seen at USC in five years under Lincoln Riley."
The UCLA Bruins have been night-and-day better than last year's team. Even when things got better late in the season, the Bruins are still a much better team than last year. What Bob Chesney has done
over there is just another example that if the right coach comes in, it does not take long to see the impact. Chesney is even getting comparisons to Curt Cignetti.
With Riley at USC, it has been years without any true elevation. The standard for Riley at USC has been postseason success and making the College Football Playoff. The Trojans are still far from that. USC has also gotten spanked by its rival, the Oregon Ducks, for 5 straight games. Its rival has been one of the best teams in the Big Ten, while USC is still fighting to prove it's worthy of being in the conference.
It is very fitting that the UCLA Bruins are able to overcome a disastrous season and look more promising than the Trojans, who came into the year with high expectations. Lincoln Riley is in desperate need of righting the ship at USC before the season takes another turn for the worse.
