The USC Trojans received stellar performances from their freshmen in the biggest game of the season against Ohio State. Their freshmen have had their down moments at times in 2026, but to see them even outshine Ohio State players who are up for national awards was very encouraging for the future.
Here is my breakdown of how each of the true freshmen for the Trojans fared in Week 9:
Trent Mosley, receiver
Trent Mosley kicked off the game with a 69-yard screen pass for a touchdown. He is as dynamic as it gets. A lot of talk was about Jeremiah Smith at the conclusion of this game; Mosley was the receiver who dominated the day. Mosley left this game with 5 catches for 101 yards. He made a huge play in the return game as well with a 44-yard punt return. When the Trojans
have him on offense, confidence is at an all-time high.
Mark Bowman, tight end
Mark Bowman did not have 100 yards of production like Mosley, but he had play of the week and maybe the entire season so far. Bowman showed what his full potential looks like against the Buckeyes, and it looks a lot like Brock Bowers. He looked like a grown man against an NFL-caliber defense. This is just his first game back from injury; I can't wait to see the plays he makes as he continues to be fully healthy.
Tomuhini Topui, defensive tackle
Tupui got involved in the rotation against Ohio State. That is great experience for a young player like him. This year will not be about getting great production; it is all about reps. He should be in line to take over as a sophomore next season.
Luke Wafle, defensive end
It was another extremely productive week for Luke Wafle, as he was chasing down backup quarterback Buckeyes all game long. Wafle had 6 quarterback pressures, and he finished the game with 3 total tackles. Wafle did play a nice role in limiting star Jeremiah Smith to a less impactful game.
Talanoa ILI, linebacker
Just like Tupui, ILI got some reps, and he has been an encouraging presence on special teams. His production and great performances will come next season when the veteran linebackers head to the NFL Draft.
RJ Sermons, defensive back
RJ Sermons makes a big special teams play every single game. He is becoming the Trojans' ace on that unit. I cannot wait to see him get an opportunity at corner with the physicality he has displayed in his short sample size on special teams. Sermons is a very underrated freshman the Trojans should be really excited about.
