USC football visits New Jersey to take on Rutgers this weekend. Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano is squarely on the hot seat. Rutgers has played as poorly as any team in the country so far this season. It's not hyperbole. The Scarlet Knights have been absolutely atrocious.
Rutgers was favored by 30 points in Week 1 but got drilled by double-digits at home against UMass, one of the worst programs in college football over the past several years. The Scarlet Knights were pancake-flat for their home opener and had absolutely no answers for an opponent which is not expected to be good this season. Their defense got eviscerated by an offense which probably won't be nearly as effective for the rest of 2026.
Rutgers then face-planted a second time against
a Boston College team which might be the worst team in the ACC. Boston College was missing its starting tight end and figured to be very limited on offense, but the Eagles were able to hit downfield plays against the Rutgers secondary. The RU offense failed in a few high-leverage situations, including a fourth down, to give BC a short field which led to points for the Eagles. Rutgers' failure is enormous without any context or added detail, but the Scarlet Knights' implosion is made that much more humiliating by the fact that the roster includes receiver KJ Duff, widely regarded as a future first-round NFL draft pick.
Greg Schiano is falling flat on his face at Rutgers right now. Hot-seat talk is not overdone or premature. Let's see what the Scarlet Knights are able to do against USC.
