On Saturday, the USC football team defeated Rutgers 42-35 in Piscataway, New Jersey. With the victory, the Trojans improved to 4-0 on the season and opened Big Ten play 1-0.
What went well for USC, and what went poorly? Here are some positives and negatives from the game:
Positive: Prophet Brown
The sixth-year senior delivered the biggest play of the day for the Trojans with his 99-yard interception return for a touchdown. If not for that play, USC would have been in serious danger of losing the game.
Positive: Kayden Dixon-Wyatt
With Trent Mosley out, USC’s other freshman receiver stepped up big. Dixon-Wyatt led the Trojans with five receptions for 77 yards.
Positive: Riley Wormley
Wormley gave USC’s offense a spark off of the bench. He ran the ball for 52 yards and a touchdown on just three carries.
Negative: Coaching
Once again, USC did
not show up prepared to play on the road. Plain and simple, that is a massive indictment of the coaching staff.
Negative: Defense
USC allowed 35 points to Rutgers. For context, the same Scarlet Knights team only scored 21 points against UMass two weeks prior.
Negative: Penalties
For the second week in a row, penalties were a big issue for USC. After being penalized eight times for 78 yards last week against Louisiana, the Trojans committed eight penalties for 71 yards against Rutgers.
