On Thursday, we got massive news in the world of college football with the report that the College Football Playoff is nearing an expansion to 24 teams. According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, the change could take place as soon as next year.
Based on the social media response to the news, the vast majority of college football fans appear to be against the expansion. Here are some of the notable reactions:
It’s all about the money
I legitimately don't know one college football fan who is favor of this.

This is college football's business people chasing some potential casual viewer in the sport's wastelands (like the Northeast) and the dollars they'll get selling the hope of that.
Absolutely horrible. https://t.co/4ZrARGlBwU
What is the point of the regular season?
Need someone who is pro-24 to explain why any Ohio
State, Indiana, Georgia, Alabama, etc. regular season game is ever going to matter again. They're better than 10 teams on the schedule every year and will get in at 9-3 and likely at 8-4. Why will the regular season matter?

Rivalry games will be impacted
Can’t wait for the first 9-2 football team to “DNP - Resting for a playoff run” their entire starting unit in a rivalry game.

Will making the playoff even mean anything?
Making the playoff no longer means anything … Great lol https://t.co/2yr3u3BLjA

What are we doing here?
If the 24-team playoff existed last year, these would be the first round matchups.

We’re blowing up the greatest regular season in sports for…this? pic.twitter.com/RF2l9tJ6sE
Not every good team should make the playoff
Good teams with flawed resumes missing out isn't a bug. It's a feature of a properly-sized CFP that balances access & urgency. https://t.co/g06q67t8AH

How times have changed
This just about sums it up.

Stakes gone, implications gone, urgency gone, meaning gone. pic.twitter.com/A4Z0SGgqvT
We must demand a change
Remember when European soccer teams tried to announce the “Super League”, and it got so much backlash from fans of every team that they reversed course?

Can we try to make the same thing happen with the 24-team College Football Playoff?
