It was not dominant by any means, but the USC Trojans won a game they had every reason to lose. There is no need to win with style at this point in the schedule against quality opponents. Penn State came into this game desperate for a win, and the Nittany Lions had their celebrated white-out game. Everything was in place for Penn State to humble USC. It did not matter, as the Trojans simply were not going to lose this football game.
It is encouraging to see the Trojans can play a football game in which mistakes are at a minimum. USC did not get in its own way this time. Jayden Maiava led the way with a stellar performance with 3 touchdowns and 300 yards through the air. When USC needed a play, he provided it. Trent Mosley's return was great to see,
and it was as though he never missed any time. Mosley had 100 yards receiving and a big-play touchdown. The dominant passing game set up King Miller to run for 100 yards on the ground. The offense showed up big in this game.
The defense gave great reason to be concerned early in the game with the same costly mistakes. As the game went on, the defense gained confidence. USC's defense was undeniable on 3rd down, holding Penn State to a 2-for-12 conversion rate. That pivotal stat showed exactly how USC maintained control for much of the game. There were explosive plays by Penn State, but when it came down to it, USC was able to get off the field.
This performance did not give the notion that USC is a title contender, but it did make up for some concerning performances the last few weeks. This game provided hope that USC can make something out of this season. The Trojans' offense will be able to win some big games, and their defense can be able to make sure of that as well. The Trojans will now head into the bye week with some momentum and getting healthier. The vibes are a lot more encouraging heading into a road game against Wisconsin.
