Manny Diaz faced the same tough question that many college football coaches face each year: who will be his starting quarterback?
The Duke head coach decided this week on Walker Eget, a transfer from San Jose State, who beat out redshirt freshman Dan Mahan in a competition that was one of the focal points for the program all offseason long.
The third-year head coach spoke on why Eget was handed the keys to the offense.
"When it all came down to it, it was just about consistency, which is normally what you expect from an older guy — keeping the same level day after day," Diaz said. "I think we were at that moment."
Eget has two years as a starter under his belt while playing for the Spartans, completing 59 percent of his passes last season for 3,051
yards and 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Now, he tries to fill the shoes of Darian Mensah, who helped lead the Blue Devils to an ACC title last season before deciding to transfer to Miami this offseason.
For Diaz and his team, it was time they found a new leader on offense.
"Just given our offseason, I think the team needed a starting quarterback," Diaz said. "Like I said, they'll follow both, but I think they're happy now that they know Walker is the number one."
