In a massive what-if for Duke, the Blue Devils could have had both a first-team midseason All-American quarterback and a first-team midseason All-American running back this season if things had gone as planned.
On3 named its midseason All-American team on Tuesday, and current running back Nate Sheppard is listed. Sheppard is third in the nation in rushing yards per game (136.67) and is first in the country with 179.8 all-purpose yards per game. The Blue Devils have leaned heavily on Sheppard early in the season as new starting quarterback Walker Eget found his rhythm.
Sports Illustrated and the Associated Press have also named Sheppard to the midseason All-American teams.
But the bad news is that Darian Mensah, who left the Blue Devils this offseason
for Miami, takes the spot at quarterback. Mensah has led the Hurricanes to a perfect start and a No. 1 ranking, throwing for 294.0 yards per game (5th in the FBS), 18 touchdowns and just one interception.
The Blue Devils and Hurricanes meet in Miami on Nov. 14.
