Ahead of Saturday's matchup between Duke and North Carolina, I asked Zack Pearson, lead writer at Tar Heels Wire, five questions about the Tar Heels, the biggest improvements they have made, an overlooked player on UNC's roster and other questions.
Here are his answers:
1. What has been the biggest improvement for the Tar Heels since the beginning of the season to now?
There's a few areas where they have improved but mainly it's been the defense. They have really turned it around on that side of the football, mainly on the defensive line. They are good at getting pressure, and their linebackers are also playing at a high level. That's made a big difference in how they have slowed down teams so far. The addition of Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator
is also notable. Last season, Freddie Kitchens was a disaster. Having someone like Petrino has worked out well.
2. What overlooked UNC player could make a difference on Saturday?
Demon June. He hasn't been getting a lot of reps, or at least as many as some have expected. He's been behind Benjamin Hall in the backfield rotation to start the season but he's still having a good year. This could be a game where UNC will want to run the ball and June could make a big difference in that area.
3. What is UNC's biggest strength this season? Also, what is their biggest weakness?
Defensive line. The Tar Heels line has been really good this season even with Melkart Abou-Jaoude missing time. Xavier Lewis has been fantastic with 6.5 sacks, right up there atop the ACC leaders in that category. Dominant offensive line play is a key to success and so far, the Tar Heels have been getting it done there.
In terms of weakness, the secondary on that side of the ball has been struggling lately. They will be missing some key pieces, so it could be a spot where Duke takes advantage. On offense, theres been times where Billy Edwards Jr. has struggled passing the ball.
4. Do you think this rivalry game flies a bit under the radar due to the basketball focus of the two schools or the fact that the programs haven't been historically good?
A little bit, yes. Both basketball teams have big storylines as Duke is the favorite in the ACC and a title contender. Meanwhile, Michael Malone takes over as head coach. With basketball looming, it does feel like there's not a lot of hype for this game.
5. What is the overall atmosphere around the program now that all of the mess with Lombardi/Belichick's son is over and the Tar Heels are showing some progress?
I think it's more on the positive side now. That whole saga, dating back to the Summer, was a stain on the program. Now that Belichick can focus on football, you're starting to see the results. Winning does cure everything though. So as long as they keep winning, fans will keep buying in. So far, it's been a good start.
