Manny Diaz wanted to make it clear: Duke’s defense pitched a shutout on Saturday, even if there were two points on the scoreboard for Boston College.
My heart is broken the scoreboard didn't say zero, and that it says two because they deserved it,” the Duke head coach said. “It is a shutout to them, but unfortunately for the stats, it's not counted as a shutout, but that's a Duke shutdown.”
The only points the Eagles could muster in the rout came from a safety, thanks to a returned blocked kick on a point-after attempt. The rest was all Blue Devils, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Just check the stats: through three quarters, before Duke started playing its reserves, Boston College had 143 total yards of offense (59 rushing), gave
up four sacks and was 1-of-9 on third-down attempts and 0-for-2 on fourth.
It was the kind of defensive effort Diaz had been looking for from his team.
“That's big-time defense against an outstanding quarterback, a phenomenal tactician and play caller in Bill O'Brien,” he said. “And like I said, that's as complete of a game as we've had in the time I've been here.”
