In recent seasons, Jon Scheyer has put together an incredible resume as an NCAA head coach, owning a 124-25 record in four seasons with Duke. But, do you remember his playing days?
Before Scheyer landed a job as one of Mike Krzyzewski's assistants, he played four seasons with the Blue Devils from 2007 to 2010. His senior season in 2010 was his best by far, as he averaged 18.2 points, 4.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 0.3 blocks while leading the ACC in both 3-point percentage (38.3%) and free-throw percentage (87.8%). Scheyer was also named to the 2009-10 All-America Second Team, alongside DeMarcus Cousins (Kentucky), a future four-time NBA All-Star.
During Duke's NCAA Tournament run, Scheyer faced another household name from the NBA,
current Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla. Scheyer and the Blue Devils faced off against Mazzulla and West Virginia in the 2010 Final Four, dominating the Mountaineers to say the least. Scheyer got the better of Mazzulla, scoring 23 points on 5-for-9 shooting from 3-point range to go along with six assists, two rebounds, two steals and zero turnovers. Mazzulla, on the other hand, struggled, posting four points, four rebounds, three assists and two turnovers. Duke would go on to win 78-57 and then defeat Butler (who was coached by another Celtics coach, Brad Stevens) to win the NCAA championship.

Although Scheyer has yet to earn a championship (as a coach) that compares to Mazzulla's NBA title, he still holds on-court bragging rights with the Celtics' head coach. With Jayson Tatum playing under Mazzulla in Boston, along with Amile Jefferson, a Celtics assistant coach, one can only wonder if they are aware of the matchup that took place more than 16 years ago.
