As the fallout of the Longhorns dramatic comeback continues, it’s time to highlight some of the players of the game. There were a number of Longhorns that made game-changing plays in this one but the choices were clear for me. Arch Manning had the late-game heroics but I don’t think he was the offensive MVP. Colin Simmons was a force off the edge but he wasn’t the defensive MVP.
Here are the players I’d say deserve game balls after last night’s win:
Offensive: RB Hollywood Smothers
Smother was, by far, the most consistent offensive player for the Falcons. He carried the ball 21 times for 74 yards(3.5 yards/carry) and 2 TDs, adding another 29 yards receiving. He was the singular constant on offense for Texas from the 1st quarter to the 4th. In a game where the pass game broke
down early, he was the answer to give the offense some life. On the final three drives, the game led by Smothers was the difference, making it fitting he got the game-winning TD.
Defensive: LB Justin Cryer
As Smothers was the constant on offense, Cryer was the constant on defense. The adjustments made by Will Muschamp at halftime were brilliant but the ability to communicate those on the field is even more impressive. Cryer, on top of leading the Longhorns in tackles, communicated at a very high level in the second half. To finish, he came up with multiple pressures in the second half, forcing throwaways from Julian Sayin. He proved his worth and then some last night.
Special Teams: K Gianni Spetic
There isn’t really another choice here. Mac Chuimento punted well, but Spetic going 4/4 on kicks(3 XPs, 1 FG) was the key. He never faced an overly difficult kick but as Connor Hawkins proved, the pressure can get to you. Spetic was able to handle his business, keep Texas on schedule and do his job cleanly yesterday.
Coaches: Will Muschamp
There is no question here. Steve Sarkisian was incredible in this one and deserves his respect, but Coach Boom took over this game. Jeremiah Smith and the Ohio State offense really found a groove in the first half, finding consistent success. In the second half, they barely totalled 120 yards and scored just 3 points. The adjustments to slowing down Smith, getting more pressure on Sayin and corralling the Buckeye offense were masterful. Yesterday, he proved why Texas felt they needed to add him this offseason.
