As Texas turns their attention from Florida to Ole Miss, it’s time for us to take a look at the Rebels. They’re led by Pete Golding, who’s already making a name for himself as a head coach. Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss is lauded as one of the best in the country. Alongside him, there are a number of future NFL players that Texas will have to contend with to keep their CFP hopes alive.
Here’s a brief look at the Rebels as they make their way into Austin:
Ole Miss Offense
It starts with what many call the best QB in the country, Trinidad Chambliss. He was inserted last season and quickly took the world by storm, leading the Rebels to a CFP Semifinal. Next to him is Kewan Lacy, likely a top 5 RB in the country and Deuce Alexander brings elite traits at WR.
The offensive line has struggled at times this season but is a veteran group that continues to get better.
It’s seemingly not to the level of last season but this is one of the best offenses Texas will play all season. If they can’t slow Chambliss and company, Texas’ offense will need to match them, something they haven’t done all season. '
Ole Miss Defense
On the defensive side, Ole Miss got off a very bad start to the season. They gave up 38 points for Louisville, 24 to LSU(largely in the 4th quarter) and 52 to Florida on the road. However the last two weeks, they’ve given up just 20 points, including just 3 to Missouri last week. Will Echoles is one of the best DTs in the country and he leads a remarkably talented unit. While they seem to be attacked, the bye weeks seem to have provided answers they needed. We’ll see if Texas’ struggling offense can find the openings in the Rebels defense, but it’s likely a taller order than Florida or LSU faced.
Ole Miss Overall
Considering Texas’ CFP hopes are on life support, this is not the ideal matchup. As good as the Texas defense has been this season, it’s unlikely they’ll hold Chambliss and company in check all game. The Texas offense will have to “trade punches” at times this weekend if the Longhorns are going to end their skid. Considering that hasn’t happened this season, it’s hard to imagine that happening.
That being said, the confidence that could come with this game could be profound. This is one of just four SEC teams with one loss(no undefeated teams), so getting a win, especially with the offense showing up, could jolt this Texas team to life. The matchup will be remarkably tough for the Longhorns but if the Longhorns earn a win, that could be a turning point for this team.
