On Saturday night, Longhorns fans were introduced to "Edgy Arch Manning." This version of Arch Manning is arrogant. He's confident. He talks trash and "let's it rip." "Edgy Arch" is also a winner, leading Texas to a 34-27 win over No. 8 Ole Miss.
Manning has been a national punching bag for more than a week. College football experts and analysts all over TV dissected every play, every mistake, every blunder and every error. They said he was overrated. That he lacked confidence. That he should be benched or that he should transfer.
"I've been hyped up all my life," Manning said after the Ole Miss game. "You know, everyone in preseason and all this stuff. I think I kinda like being disregarded and counted out."

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Manning was "edgy" this week at practice. The weight of the college football world had descended upon his quarterback and his quarterback decided to fight back.
"I would use the word edgy, and I like it," Sarkisian said before the Ole Miss game. "He's edgy right now, and you know I think that somebody texted me today that we lost the 'Ah Shucks' kid, you know, and we've created something else. I don't know if we lost him. We created this, you know. We did, all of us, y'all included, me, the whole thing, right? Everybody on ESPN, we've created this, and so we'll see what comes out of it. But he's edgy right now, and honestly, I appreciate that about him."
Manning said during the week that if he's going down, he's going to go down letting it all hang out.
"I think we just starting letting it rip," Manning said to the media this week. “Our backs are against the wall right now and there's no place I'd rather be. Just let her rip. I’m gonna die on the hill of I'm letting it rip.”
That edginess carried over into the game against the Rebels. Manning was electric in the first half. The junior led Texas on four scoring drives for 24 yards in the first half, and should've had another if a wide open Cam Coleman had held onto a perfect deep pass in the first quarter.
On the sideline, Manning was hyped up, screaming "I'm f-ing coming!" Manning looked every bit the star he's been projected to be.

"One thing I know about Arch Manning, he's a fighter," Sarkisian said after the win. "I like the edgy, kind of borderline arrogant, full-of-swagger Arch. I just feel like that's when he's at his best."
Sarkisian said the team responded to "Edgy Arch" and played like their quarterback.
"The edginess that I touched on, I think, carried over to our team," Sarkisian said of Manning. "I think our team played that way because of him. When he responds that way, when he plays that way, when he shows that fire in his belly that he had tonight, I think the team responds to that."

The third quarter put Manning's new edginess to the test. Much like the past two games, the Texas offense couldn't get out of its own way early in the second half. Manning was blasted from his blindside and fumbled. The fumble was jumped on in the endzone by Ole Miss defensive end Kam Franklin for a Rebels touchdown.
"Edgy Arch" suddenly looked like "Deer in the headlights Arch" that we've seen for much of this season.
The New Orleans native was also hit so hard in the head on another sack that he had to leave the game for a full concussion test. Manning and the offense struggled in the third quarter again. It started to look like a repeat of the OU and Florida games.
After Ole Miss came back and tied the game, Manning threw a bad interception. With the ball and the momentum, it looked like the game would be another disastrous loss. Another blown lead. Another week of negative banter.
Was "Edgy Arch" just making a cameo?
But when the Longhorns defense forced a punt on the ensuring Ole Miss possession, "Edgy Arch" returned. Texas ran the ball on the next drive, but it was capped by a perfect naked bootleg by Manning for an easy touchdown. The Longhorns had the lead back and wouldn't give it up again, despite some nervous moments in the final minute.
"I had a chip on my shoulder all week and I gotta continue to play like that," Manning said after the game.

Sarkisian realizes he has a different quarterback than he's ever had before. A quarterback that has grown up privileged, lauded as the second coming and hailed as a possible better version of his uncles and grandfather. That kind of incubator isn't exactly the best at creating a "dawg."
"His world, his life, is different than anybody else I've ever been around that's been part of this sport," Sarkisian said. "But the guy keeps coming back. And so we're lucky to have him as our guy."
After the game "Edgy Arch" melted into "Loving Son Arch." Manning found his family for a loving embrace. A son that leaned on his family during a trying week and wanted to return that love after a win.

"It was a hard Sunday," Manning said. "And I want over there to their place and damn near ball cried. So, just being able to see them after a win felt good."
If "Edgy Arch" continues to play quarterback for Texas, the Longhorns still might have a chance at making the College Football Playoff this year.
