The Texas Longhorns' brutal injury luck just got worse. Starting running back Hollywood Smothers is set to miss the rest of the 2026 season with an injury, according to On3's Pete Nakos.
He was listed as out for this weekend's game against the Missouri Tigers on the initial injury report on Wednesday. Smothers has battled injuries throughout the season, his first with the Longhorns. He had just four carries in last week's win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs, finishing with -6 yards. He missed their games against the Oklahoma Sooners and Ole Miss Rebels earlier in the season.
He is second on the team with 69 carries for 283 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Raleek Brown has taken on a bigger workload with Smothers limited
and leads the team in carries (92), yards (452), touchdowns (5), and yards per carry (4.9).
Smothers was one of Texas' top additions this offseason after two excellent seasons with the NC State Wolfpack. He was ranked as the No. 3 running back in the transfer portal by 247Sports, but his injuries have prevented him from getting going.
At 6-2, Texas has a path to make the College Football Playoff after debuting as the No. 7 team in the initial rankings. They will close the season against the No. 18 Missouri Tigers, No. 14 LSU Tigers, Arkansas Razorbacks, and Texas A&M Aggies.
