It is understandable. It is logical. It is probably necessary. But it is also sad. Arch Manning's press conferences used to be fun. He was gregarious. He would would lean back and banter with the press like a conversation with friends. But after an answer last week led to a PR firestorm, Manning's demeanor is completely different.
We all know what happened last week, a question that probably shouldn't have been asked led to an answer Manning would like to take back. After the controversy was discussed in all corners of the national media and a public apology issued, the days of "off-the-cuff" Manning are over.
It was evident Saturday night after the Longhorns 30-6 win over UTSA. Manning, who didn't play well, looked exhausted and joyless. With
deep, dark circles under his eyes, his answers were a cross between serious and solemn. There was a chance it was just Manning upset with himself after a bad game. He's never very genial after a loss.

But it seems likely the events of the past week have changed him and his interactions with the press for good. That new, much more reserved demeanor was on full display in his Monday press availability. Manning took questions from the assembled press. His answers were short and to the point. There were no tangents, no real emotion, no fun and very few smiles. You could hear it in his voice.

We've all had moments where our youthful innocence was lost. It changes us. We "grow up" for better or for worse. We never see the world the same. We're more guarded. Not as forthcoming. But it's also a sad time in our lives, because something bad has happened.
Manning had his moment for all the world to see and comment on last week. So it is natural he's become more businesslike. Manning will probably never be the same in his interactions with the media. It's a move that will help him in his career as a public figure. But we'll miss the bouncy kid he used to be.
The question yet to be answered is, will it impact his play on the field. We'll see in Knoxville on Saturday.
