The Chargers could shake things up even more on offense. After offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said he would call all plays from the coaches' booth instead of the sidelines, he also said running back Omarion Hampton could see more snaps.
McDaniel was asked about Hampton after head coach Jim Harbaugh indicated the running back would get more touches.
"We've had some strong consideration on adjusting the exact flow,” McDaniel said.
"I'm excited about someone dictating the rotation.”
Hampton has yet to reach double-digit carries since Week 5 against the Broncos. The 23-year-old has endured a rough sophomore slump and a significant decline in production and volume.
Hampton showed some promise in his limited action in his rookie season before his ankle
injury. The running back showed that he could be a cowboy back in his short stint; however, due to a variety of reasons, that has been far from the case for Hampton.
The former Tar Heel is averaging 3.5 yards per carry (39th), 89 carries (25th), 309 yards (28th), and three touchdowns (T-17th). Last week against the Rams, he had 11 touches, 9 on the ground and through the air. Hampton totaled 23 yards.
Hampton's struggles stem from a combination of poor efficiency, a messy backfield and structural offensive line issues.
It's been one thing after another for Hampton and the offense. However, McDaniel and Harbaugh's comments could signal a shift in Hampton's favor. It may be too late to salvage the Chargers' season, but that may not be the case with the running back.
