Nothing seems to be going right for the Chargers in the 2026 season.
The offense has been subpar through the first four games, their defense has picked up the pace, and their special teams have been below average.
While all eyes are on the offense, the special teams have been just as bad, especially punt returner Derius Davis.
Davis has experienced a sharp decline in special teams production and consistency after his All-Pro rookie season in 2023.
Special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken spoke on Davis' play on Thursday. While he expressed confidence, Ficken said a change at that position is possible.
"There's always consideration," Ficken said.
" I mean, we're always uncovering every stone to see what is out there. But what we have and what (Davis has)
done ... we got to make sure we do a great job helping our team by catching those balls when we're in those situations."
Davis hasn't been as sharp. In the Chargers' latest contest, he muffed a punt against the Seahawks in Week 4, which Seattle recovered to set up extra points.
Through four games, Davis has a total of 14 punt returns but is averaging only 4.7 yards per return. As for kick returns, he has five for 121 yards (24.2 yards per return).
It doesn't stop with Davis; kicker Cameron Dicker and punter JK Scott have faced early execution problems and injuries dating back to the preseason.
So far, the Chargers' special teams are among the worst in the NFL through the first month of the season, putting Ficken under heavy scrutiny.
If the Chargers are desperate for a change, they could turn to someone else, like rookie wide receiver Brenen Thompson.
