The Chargers are adding quarterback help, signing veteran Jake Browning.
The move comes after Trey Lance was placed on injured reserve.
Browning, 30, initially joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past offseason. He signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract in mid-March.
However, Browning was released by the Buccaneers on the final day of roster cuts after losing the backup quarterback role to rookie Jalon Daniels.
The Chargers will be Browning’s fourth NFL team. Browning began his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings, signing after going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The Vikings waived him out of the preseason but re-signed him to the practice squad. Browning signed a futures deal with Minnesota for the 2020 season, but was waived again coming
out of camp and spent the year on the practice squad before signing another futures deal for 2021.
Minnesota waived Browning coming out of the preseason in 2022 and later signed him with the Bengals.
Browning served as the Bengals' backup quarterback for the past three seasons. He played in 17 games for the Bengals and started in 10 of them. He went 4-6 as a starter, throwing for 2,707 yards, 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions and completing 68.5% of his passes.
The 30-year-old spent his four college seasons at Washington, winning Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2016.
Browning was born and raised in Folsom, California.
