Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has had a tough start to the season.
Herbert has looked far from the star quarterback we've seen throughout the first six seasons of his career. Over three games, he looks lost in Mike McDaniel's new scheme, and in fact, that may be exactly what we're seeing.
Former Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson believes Herbert isn't yet confident or comfortable in McDaniel's scheme, which has contributed to the Chargers' slow start.
"I don't feel like [Justin Herbert's] comfortable yet," Wilson said.
"I don't feel like their best player in Herbert feels confident yet in the system. And he's learning it, and you think about what Mike [McDaniel] did in Miami: he had Tua on time, quick play action, ball out before
he even looks up; he had these fast receivers in Tyreek Hill, constant motion.
"That's not really how Justin Herbert plays, and I think that transition is going to take a few more weeks, but are they going to have enough time?"
McDaniel's scheme is exceptionally complex and requires Herbert to make adjustments in regard to his timing, footwork and decision-making habits.
These changes have made Herbert look like a below-average quarterback at the start of the season. The numbers tell us just that, as he is averaging 209 yards per game, completing just 59.1% of his passes and has thrown only three touchdowns to four interceptions.
From struggling with checkdowns to making mechanical adjustments, Herbert has struggled to find his footing in this offense. As a result, the rest of the unit — from the offensive line and running backs to the pass catchers — has struggled to get going as well.
Time is on their side, but the Chargers need to figure it out fast before they stare down the barrel of 0-4.
