Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed that the team could plan on using two left guards.
Harbaugh spoke to the media on Monday and said that Kayode Awosika and Trey Pipkins, who are the final two candidates for the starting spot, could split time at left guard.
"I'm not so sure nothing precludes us from playing them both. That's a possibility, too. Great option there, that bodes so good for us," Harbaugh said.
Harbaugh also added that they could just go with using the 'freshest guy.'
"Maybe play freshest guy, hottest hand, Harbaugh added. "The old platooning guards. It's been done before and it could be something that's really good for us. That's at our disposal, that's where I see the left guard position as I stand here today."
The Chargers'
interior line already has some major problems with the season a little over a week away. Los Angeles is already without their top center, Tyler Biadasz, who tore his ACL a few weeks ago.
As for the right guard, the Chargers will likely rely on Cole Strange, who has had limited time on the right side, at least compared to the left side. Strange has over 1,500 snaps at left guard, while he has a little over 800 snaps at right guard.
The left guard position was the more intriguing battle when things kicked off in late July. It started off with five guards duking it out, including rookie Jake Slaughter. However, the Biadasz injury forced the Chargers to make Slaughter the center to kick off the season.
Awosika and Pipkins are among the 11 offensive linemen on the Chargers' initial 53-man roster. Pipkins has started games at both right tackle and right guard over his career with the Bolts.
As for Awosika, he has far more experience at right guard. The 27-year-old has spent most of his time at right guard for the Lions and Eagles.
If the Chargers choose to alternate between Awosika and Pipkins, it would be highly unusual, especially given the struggles along the interior last season.
