Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said offensive lineman Trevor Penning will start in Week 3 if Trey Pipkins III is out.
Harbaugh told the media on Monday.
Penning played both guard spots in their Week 2 loss to the Raiders.
The veteran guard played one series at right guard in the first half on a drive that ended with a one-yard rushing touchdown. Penning replaced Cole Strange there.
Strange returned to the contest, and Penning replaced Awosika for most of the second half. Awosika left the game with a fibula injury and will miss time.
After the game, Penning said he was ready no matter what had happened.
"Not a situation the team wants by losing your starting guard. I was ready, that's part of the job," Penning said. "Be ready when unfortunate things
happen."
"I've been working at both [guard spots] all camp," Penning added.
Pipkins was sidelined for Week 2 with a knee injury.
Penning, 27, is in his second season in Los Angeles after spending his first four seasons with the Saints.
New Orleans selected Penning with the 19th overall pick in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
After consecutive underwhelming seasons in New Orleans, Penning landed in Los Angeles in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick.
Penning has played in eight games as a Charger. He's played in 222 offensive snaps in Los Angeles, accounting for 43% of all offensive snaps.
The Chargers will hit the road for the first time this season in Week 3 against the Bills.
