Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel admitted his team's Week 1 performance was not what he envisioned.
On Thursday, McDaniel spoke to the media and said that performance was 'a case of humble pie.'
“You have a lot of visions coming to a new team and working on something for months — and the vision never looked like that," McDaniel said.
“It was a case of humble pie. Didn’t feel good to anyone.”
McDaniel also added that he was 'shocked' by the performance.
"I think I would be in a way different mood than every other press conference that you've seen me, if that was any indication of the way the ball has been. So yeah, it was kind of shocking."
McDaniel was hired with the expectation of taking the Chargers' offense to another level, led by
Justin Herbert. However, after one week, it looked like the same offense we saw under the previous regime.
The Chargers' offense was dormant for most of the game. In the 60-minute contest against the Cardinals, McDaniel's offense had the ball for only 22:29 minutes and called 51 plays, compared to Arizona's 72.
Los Angeles totaled 268 yards, averaged 5.3 yards per play, and had two turnovers.
The offense was poor and disjointed, struggling with execution, penalties, and sustaining drives. The fourth quarter was not pretty, marked by a blocked punt, an interception and a turnover on downs.
McDaniel and the Chargers have a golden opportunity to put that performance aside and bounce back in Week 2 against the Raiders.
