Following another defeat that dropped the Chargers to 0-6, speculation regarding offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel’s future reached a boiling point. With the Week 7 bye providing a clear window for a coaching change, many expected head coach Jim Harbaugh would pull the plug on McDaniel.
Instead, McDaniel was spotted on the practice field on Tuesday alongside quarterback Justin Herbert
, suggesting the front office is giving him a temporary reprieve. Before Tuesday's practice, insiders reported a "growing buzz" that the organization was prepared to separate from the former Dolphins head coach. Had Harbaugh decided to make a move, passing game specialist Adam Gase was widely expected to step in as the interim offensive play-caller.
Harbaugh noted
that the coaching staff is using the week off to "look into everything," hinting at a desire to simplify a playbook that has led to an offense that ranks 30th in scoring (15.0 points per game), 26th in total yards (287.2 yards per game), and last (32nd) in EPA per play and turnovers (15).
While McDaniel is still employed by the Chargers, anything can happen at any given moment.
