Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said he’s not worried about his job security after their 0-5 start.
McDaniel spoke to the media on Thursday and said he’s not worried about his job; rather, he feels like he's always coaching for it, no matter the situation.
"I feel like it's core to my job to always feel that way,” McDaniel said.
McDaniel also added that the moment someone gets comfortable in the NFL, “it’s a wrap.”
The 43-year-old offensive coordinator was undoubtedly the best addition for the team this offseason. The hope and expectations for the Chargers were that this offense, with Justin Herbert, would be transformational.
Herbert was expected to be in the MVP conversation, while McDaniel viewed his time in Los Angeles as a stepping
stone toward another head coaching opportunity.
Instead, Herbert is playing the worst football of his career (for a variety of reasons), while McDaniel is leading the Chargers to the worst offense in the league.
Even with all that being the case, McDaniel is confident in his and his offenses' ability to turn things around.
"I will be doing my very best because from an integrity standpoint I think it’s really insulting to do anything else. That won’t change. I would be so embarrassed if I told you, ‘well now I’m going to try harder.’ Like what? What have you been doing? I’m confident in the players that we have. I think that the improvement that I see before the results generally lead to good things. But talk is cheap. We got to do."
As things stand heading into Week 6, that looks like a tall task.
Herbert's future in Los Angeles is pretty clear, while McDaniel's job is in jeopardy, especially if they continue to drop games in the coming weeks.
