The Chargers' season appears to be going off the rails.
Lackluster play on offense and injuries have hurt the Chargers badly, contributing to their disastrous 0-4 start. Things look like they are getting worse, as the top two offensive tackles Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt could miss time, along with safety Derwin James Jr.
The Chargers can't catch a break, and by the looks of it, they could be competing for a top-5 pick instead of a spot in the playoffs.
With so much against the Chargers and them stuck in what appears to be No Man's Land, Sports Illustrated NFL writer Gilberto Manzano urges Los Angeles to trade Justin Herbert.
"I can’t believe it has come to this point, but it’s time the 0–4 Chargers explore every option for how to best rebuild this team,
including the possibility of trading [Justin] Herbert (19-of-31, 189 yards, TD, 2 INTs), who struggled in the 30–23 loss to the Seahawks," Manzano wrote.
Herbert has spent the better part of seven-plus seasons in Los Angeles.
More often than not, Herbert has looked like the first-round pick and franchise quarterback the Chargers selected in 2020. This season, he's looked far from that.
The offense was supposed to elevate Herbert's play, making it easier for the pass catchers, offensive line and running backs. Instead, Mike McDanie's complex scheme has done more harm for the team, especially Herbert.
While it's not entirely his fault, Herbert has done himself no favors with an uncharacteristic stat line. This season, Herbert has recorded 816 passing yards (21st), four touchdowns (tied for 22nd), six interceptions (tied for 27th), and a QBR of 28.0 (29th).
Herbert is averaging 204 passing yards per game, well below his average. The 28-year-old is on pace for career lows across the board.
The Chargers appear to be going nowhere this season, and if that continues, the conversation about moving on from Herbert will only get louder.
