The most anticipated offseason storyline culminates in Mike McDaniel's regular-season debut as the Chargers' new offensive coordinator. For the past two seasons under Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers operated with a more traditional, run-heavy identity. A rebuilt, healthy offensive line still facing interior questions

Their presence gives Herbert premium protection against the Cardinals' edge rushers, highlighted by Josh Sweat, but the interior of the line remains a major focal point. Kayode Awosika, who was named the starting left guard over Trey Pipkins III, will line up directly next to second-round rookie Jake Slaughter. Under Minter, Los Angeles boasted one of the NFL's best scoring defenses over the last two seasons. O'Leary’s challenge in Week 1 is to prove that the unit won't suffer much of a drop-off. While the core remains intact, I am watching closely to see how effective O'Leary's more aggressive blitz approach and distinct coverage variations are against Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
Shuffling the linebacker room
The Chargers' defense took a hit late in training camp when veteran linebacker Denzel Perryman was placed on injured reserve. On the unofficial depth chart, Del'Shawn Phillips is the starter alongside Daiyan Henley. Phillips has historically been a special teams ace and a rotational depth piece. Out wide, all eyes are on how targets will be split between Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston, and Tre' Harris. At tight end, rookie standout Oronde Gadsden II was listed as the third-string tight end behind Charlie Kolar and David Njoku, suggesting the coaching staff is prioritizing blocking and traditional inline skill sets. Herbert's target distribution will offer the first real blueprint for who he establishes a rapport with.
