The Chargers dropped their 2026 regular-season opener to the Cardinals in a sloppy, uncharacteristic fashion.
There was some rust under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, but it was a glaring tactical quirk along the offensive line that raised eyebrows: a drive-by-drive platoon at left guard.
Los Angeles elected to rotate Kayode Awosika and Trey Pipkins III, despite Awosika being named the starting left guard ahead of the game against Arizona. Awosika started the game and played two drives before Pipkins entered the game. They alternated for the rest of the afternoon.
When pressed after the game about the decision to rotate the two, Harbaugh was unapologetic.
“We felt that was the best thing for us,” Harbaugh said. “Just how good those two
players are, and yeah, had the rotation. That was our decision.”
Harbaugh said that he thought there were some good things, but also some things that need improvement.
When asked if the rotating door would continue moving forward, Harbaugh kept his cards close to his chest.
“We’ll look at that,” he added.
According to Pro Football Focus' initial stat tracking, Awosika allowed zero quarterback pressures on 25 pass-blocking snaps, while Pipkins gave up a pressure and a sack on 14 pass-blocking snaps.
