The big question surrounding the Chargers backup quarterback vacancy has finally reached a conclusion. On Sunday, it was announced they have waived quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, solidifying former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance as the definitive number-two quarterback on the depth chart.
According to reports, the Chargers hope to navigate Uiagalelei through waivers to secure him onto the practice squad, though he remains eligible to be claimed by any of the other 31 NFL team looking for depth at the position.
Lance, who served as Herbert’s backup last season, entered camp as the favorite. However, his performances across the first two preseason outings were plagued by passing inaccuracies and overthrows. While his mobility on the ground consistently
flashed, his lack of consistency as a pure passer kept the door wide open.
Uiagalelei, who spent the 2025 season on the Chargers' practice squad, generated a wave of momentum after impressive showings throughout training camp. He displayed flashes of superior rhythm inside the offense, moving the unit more fluidly through the air than Lance at various points.
While Uiagalelei outpaced Lance on paper in the finale, Lance's systemic familiarity, dynamic dual-threat athleticism, and locker-room chemistry gave him the ultimate edge.
